The Department of Mining Engineering at IIT (BHU) Varanasi was established in 1923 — the first of its kind in India. Conceived by Bharat Ratna Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, it has since been at the forefront of mining education, research, and industry collaboration.
The department awarded India's first Ph.D. in Mining Engineering in 1964 and continues to produce engineers who lead the nation's mineral industry. With 19 fully equipped laboratories and an underground experimental model mine, it remains unparalleled in hands-on research infrastructure.
